First and foremost, we hope that you and yours are safe and dry, have electricity and are being lifted up by the amazing acts of kindness and generosity being displayed in our beloved city/state. As part of the Making It Better family, we value our relationship and want you to know that you are in our hearts as we send thoughts and prayers your way.
Many of you know we have a program site/office/supplies storage at the Belmont Place Apts. in west Houston. Our unit has experienced water damage with a heavy rain several times in the past, so we were quite anxious to get over there to check on things as the area around it was inundated (and still is) with several feet of water in homes. We were were fully prepared to see thousands of dollars’ worth of supplies ruined and a huge mess to clean up, but thank God, the unit was totally dry!
Sadly, many of our students and their families didn’t fare so well. In particular, students attending Ashford, Bruce, Ross and Walnut Bend elementary schools were hit especially hard, with many Bruce families still living in shelters! With your help, we will help ease these families’ burdens and bring smiles to the kids’ faces with our We’ve Got Your Back backpack drive for students at these four campuses. We’ve Got Your Back will start today and run through September 15 and will provide backpacks filled with school supplies, socks, snacks, and toiletries for these children in need. A huge thanks to our first responders, our city/county leaders and others on the front lines of this disaster. We have seen the best of our family members, friends, neighbors and even strangers in this unprecedented and heartbreaking disaster but we have no doubt that we will continue to be united in the greater Houston community and throughout Texas to support one another through this recovery.
