On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, AnnaLee and Andy Waite made a very generous donation of $25,000 to Making It Better. This is the first major donation that will fund our Adopt-a-School program, which challenges individuals and other organizations to step up in supporting schools in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) that serve low-income, high-needs populations.
With their $25,000 donation, the Waites are underwriting the Reading Intervention program at Ross Elementary, which provides individualized, small group tutorials for struggling readers in grades K-2. The goal is to create proficient readers by the end of the 3rd grade.
Ross Elementary is a small school that serves approximately 400 students, many of whom face multiple stressors related to living in poverty. When principal Erika Carter arrived at Ross Elementary, the school was classified as “improvement required,” (IR). Thanks to her leadership and targeted interventions, including those provided by Making It Better, students have made great academic progress, and Ross is no longer in IR status.
Through our Adopt-a-School program, we continue our work of supporting students in developing critical early literacy skills by providing three tiers under which donors can adopt a school: Platinum ($50,000), Gold ($25,000) and Silver ($10,000).
