We invite you to make a difference and partner with us during National Read Aloud Month which is set for March 2018. Due to school scheduling, Making It Better will be providing National Read Aloud activities from February 19th through March 8th. Reading aloud, for 15 minutes a day, is critically important during a child’s earliest years of life, and the benefits of reading aloud through the elementary years has been shown to instill a love of reading. Studies show that not only does reading aloud throughout elementary school years expose children to more complex words or stories than when they read alone, but they are also more likely to read more books independently in later years.
There are two ways that you can be part of the solution for raising literacy rates during Read Aloud Month.
1) Become a classroom sponsor for $500 per classroom to provide each child with two books to begin or build their home library. When you consider there is only 1 book for every 300 children living in low-income homes, two books will make a difference in their lives.
2) Encourage employees, associates, and friends to serve as volunteer readers in any one of the nine HISD elementary schools served by Making It Better programs. Each volunteer will choose the school, day and time that works best for their schedule and will commit to reading once/week for three weeks from February 19th through March 8th. Volunteers will read for 30 minutes/visit to their 1st or 2nd grade classroom on the agreed upon day and time.
